The North British Distillery, a major whisky and spirits manufacturer, initiated a long-term asbestos management program to reduce site-wide risk. The project involved routine surveys, condition monitoring, and targeted asbestos abatement in high-risk areas.
OBJECTIVES
WHAT WE DID
Survey Planning
A detailed survey schedule was developed to align with operational needs. Permits to work were issued, and all equipment and PPE were pre-approved by site management.
Survey Execution
A management survey was conducted across all accessible areas, excluding internal plant equipment. Annual condition monitoring was also implemented.
Sampling
Samples were collected in unoccupied areas and analysed in accordance with HSG248 standards.
FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS
A mix of ACMs in good and poor condition were found. Poor-condition materials were prioritised for abatement. High-risk ACMs, such as those in the rooftop tank room, were immediately isolated to prevent exposure. Internal components of plant equipment were excluded from the survey scope.
High-risk ACMs were scheduled for removal or encapsulation, and affected areas were locked off until abatement could be completed.
Annual re-inspections were recommended to comply with CAR 2012.
Asbestos awareness training was delivered to senior personnel to support internal management of the asbestos register.
And an H-Type vacuum was provided to trained staff for safe removal of minor ACMs like gaskets.
OUTCOME
The distillery now has a robust asbestos management system, including a live register, condition monitoring, and a proactive abatement strategy. The client was highly satisfied and commissioned additional surveys and removal projects.
