Historic Environment Scotland (HES) manages over 300 properties of national importance, including castles, abbeys, palaces, and historic buildings. Their mission is to protect, understand, and share Scotland’s heritage.
Franks Portlock is proud to maintain a long-standing relationship with Historic Environment Scotland, having surveyed a significant portion of their extensive portfolio of monuments, listed buildings, visitor centres, and administrative properties across Scotland, including the islands. This collaboration began with a comprehensive period of review and consultancy and has continued through numerous complex projects, including high-profile sites such as Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood.
As part of this ongoing partnership, Franks Portlock was commissioned to carry out an asbestos survey of the visitor toilet facilities at Edinburgh Castle in preparation for planned demolition works. The project was scheduled outside of public hours to ensure minimal disruption and uphold public safety.
OBJECTIVES
WHAT WE DID
Pre-Survey Walkthrough
Conducted with the client to assess potential limitations and define the scope of work
Scheduling
Survey split into two visits, both conducted outside of public hours
Coordination
A joiner was present to repair any penetrations made during the survey; a toolbox talk was held with all personnel prior to commencement
Execution
Survey completed after castle closing hours; immediate repairs ensured the area was safe for reoccupation
FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS
No ACMs were identified during the initial survey. Some areas were inaccessible and scheduled for inspection during a follow-up visit closer to the demolition date. No immediate action was required and a return visit was recommended to inspect previously inaccessible areas.
OUTCOME
The survey confirmed the absence of ACMs in accessible areas, allowing demolition planning to proceed safely and efficiently. The client expressed satisfaction with the professionalism, planning, and timely delivery of the report.
This project is one of many that exemplifies Franks Portlock’s commitment to supporting Historic Environment Scotland in preserving and maintaining Scotland’s rich architectural heritage.
Our work continues across the country, including refurbishment surveys and air testing at iconic sites such as the Palace of Holyrood.
