“Treat everyone equally and lead by example”
Case study: Kieran Hughes, Junior Project Manager

As part of International Men’s Day, Franks Portlock is proud to highlight and celebrate the men within our organisation who are making a difference — not only through their work, but through the positive impact they have on others. This year, we spoke with Kieran Hughes, Junior Project Manager, about his journey, values, and what being a positive role model means to him.
Kieran joined Franks Portlock three years ago, beginning his journey as a Surveyor/Analyst before progressing to his current role as Junior Project Manager. His day-to-day involves learning the ropes of project management while still carrying out analytical and surveying duties — a testament to his dedication and versatility within the business.
“I’m learning the role of a Project Manager while still being a Surveyor/Analyst — it’s a great opportunity to develop my skills while continuing the work I enjoy.”
Like many in the asbestos industry, Kieran’s career path was unexpected. He began as an asbestos removal operative, later gaining his P402 qualification during the Covid lockdown. After some persistence, he secured a position as a Trainee Asbestos Surveyor at another company, eventually earning his P403 and P404 qualifications — enabling him to take on a dual role as Surveyor and Analyst.
“As with many people in the industry, I fell into it by chance. I took every opportunity to learn and grow, and that’s what led me to where I am today.”
One of the key themes of International Men’s Day is being a positive role model for other men and boys — something Kieran takes seriously both professionally and personally.
“For me, a good role model is someone who treats others as they would like to be treated themselves, treats everyone equally and leads by example with their actions.”
Kieran strives to live by these values daily, leading with empathy and respect. As a father, this has taken on even greater meaning.
“I make a conscious effort to demonstrate those values. Now that I have a son, it’s even more important to me to lead by example and hopefully be someone he can look up to with pride.”
When asked why he chose to take part in this year’s International Men’s Day feature, Kieran admits that it came down to practising what he preaches.
“I decided to lead by example. I believe we all have a responsibility to make the world a better place by what we say and do.”
Before preparing for this piece, Kieran hadn’t given much thought to International Men’s Day — but his research gave him a new appreciation for what it represents.
“I now know it’s about promoting men’s health and wellbeing, and just generally celebrating and being proud of being a man.”
Kieran believes that breaking the stigma around men’s mental health is key to positive change.
“More is being done now than ever before to break the stigma around men’s mental health, and that can only be a positive thing. We need to keep encouraging those who are struggling to speak out and make sure everyone knows there is support available — whether that’s professional help or just reaching out to a friend, family member or colleague.”
When asked what leaders can do to be good role models for younger men, Kieran’s answer is simple but powerful:
“It sounds so simple but — just be a good person. Treat others as you’d like to be treated. Set good examples, encourage and acknowledge good actions and behaviour.”
Kieran’s story reflects the spirit of International Men’s Day: celebrating the positive impact that men can have through kindness, leadership, and integrity. His approach to both work and life embodies the values Franks Portlock is proud to uphold — respect, responsibility, and a commitment to continual growth.
“I try to lead by example and make a positive difference — not just as a man, but as a human being.”
