Asbestos is the name given to naturally occurring fibrous minerals, some of which can be extremely hazardous to health. Completing an asbestos awareness test or training is required by the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that employees or self-employed contractors can recognise asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and know what to do if they find it so they can work safely and without risk to themselves and others.

Asbestos awareness training (AAT) is a mandatory requirement for any employee, employer or self-employed person who is or is liable to be exposed to asbestos under Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. It’s strongly recommended that training providers are UKATA certified.

The purpose of the training is to equip those working in the building trade and other service-based industries such as construction workers, gas and shop fitters, heating and ventilation engineers, and fire or burglar alarm fitters, with a level of knowledge about asbestos so that they can recognise it during the course of their work.

What Does Asbestos Awareness Training Involve?

Asbestos awareness training is not designed to provide the level or depth of knowledge required to enable candidates to work with and remove asbestos. It provides an awareness of what to look out for when disturbing the fabric of a building or working on land that may be contaminated.

The training session covers a range of areas including:

  • recognising the properties of asbestos and understanding its effects on health, including its interaction with smoking,
  • being able to recognise the types of products or materials likely to contain asbestos,
  • understanding the operations which could result in asbestos exposure and the importance of preventive controls to minimise exposure,
  • safe work practices, control measures, and protective equipment,
  • emergency procedures if asbestos is located and how to use and maintain respiratory protective equipment,
  • decontamination and waste handling procedures

In-person UKATA Asbestos Awareness Training

We provide AAT at a venue of your choice, whether that’s in your place of work or a training venue. The asbestos training course can be done on its own or with additional non-certified bespoke sessions and survey/air test walkthroughs and presentations so that you get the most from your day.

  • classes limited to 15 attendees to ensure everyone gets the most from the training
  • each training session lasts four hours

Assessment

Our in-person asbestos awareness training is UKATA-certified.

Each candidate is required to sit a short multiple choice exam at the end of the training to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered. An asbestos awareness certificate is presented to them upon successful completion of the exam.

In line with the recommendations from UKATA, the certificate should be renewed every year to ensure candidates are up-to-date with new information. The annual update can be done online.
